Overview

What Is a Sonography or Ultrasound Scan?

Sonography (also called an ultrasound scan or USG) uses high-frequency sound waves to build real-time images of the organs inside your body. A handheld probe is moved over the skin with a water-based gel, and the echoes returning from your tissues are converted into a live picture on screen. Because it uses sound rather than X-rays, sonography involves no ionising radiation at all, which is why it is safe in pregnancy and can be repeated as often as your doctor needs.

It is usually the first imaging test a doctor orders for abdominal pain, an abnormal liver or kidney blood report, a palpable lump, or a suspected stone. It is quick, painless, and needs no injection or dye for a standard study.

Preparation

How to Prepare for Your Sonography Scan

Preparation is not the same for every scan, and getting it wrong is the most common reason a study has to be repeated. Check which type you are booked for before you come in.

STEP 01
Confirm Which Scan You Need
Check your prescription or call us. Preparation differs between abdomen, pelvic and thyroid scans
STEP 02
Fast 6–8 Hours (Abdomen Scans Only)
An empty stomach lets the gallbladder fill and reduces bowel gas that blocks the view
STEP 03
Fill Your Bladder (Pelvic & KUB Only)
Drink 3–4 glasses of water an hour before your slot and do not pass urine until after the scan
STEP 04
Avoid Carbonated Drinks
Gas and bubbles scatter sound waves and obscure the deeper abdominal organs
STEP 05
Wear Loose, Two-Piece Clothing
Makes it easy to expose only the area being scanned
STEP 06
Carry Prescription & Prior Reports
Earlier scans and blood reports let the radiologist compare and report accurately

Result Interpretation

Understanding Your Sonography Report

Normal Study

Organs of normal size and echotexture, no stones, no free fluid, no masses. If you have risk factors, routine yearly screening is usually enough.

Common Abnormal Findings

Fatty liver, gallstones, kidney stones and simple cysts are the findings we see most often. Most are manageable, but they need clinical correlation rather than self-interpretation.

Radiologist Reviewed

Every scan is performed and reported by a qualified radiologist or sonologist, with a clear clinical impression rather than raw measurements alone.

Next Steps If Needed

Where further evaluation is required, CT, MRI, FibroScan, LFT, KFT and endoscopy are all available within the VRX network.

If your scan reports fatty liver, that is a signal rather than a diagnosis. Grading on ultrasound is subjective, and the useful next question is how much stiffness or fibrosis is present. Our fatty liver disease clinic explains the staging and treatment pathway, and a FibroScan liver assessment quantifies fibrosis far more precisely than a standard ultrasound can.

Limitations worth knowing: bowel gas can obscure deep structures, which is why fasting matters. Image quality can be reduced at higher body weight. Ultrasound will not reliably pick up very small or early lesions, so if symptoms persist despite a normal scan, ask your doctor about CT or MRI.

It is a short auto ride from Goregaon station on the west side and is convenient for patients from Unnat Nagar, Motilal Nagar, Bangur Nagar, Siddharth Nagar, Ram Mandir, Jogeshwari and Oshiwara.
Yes. Our Kandivali East centre at Shop 34-38, Gayatri Satsang, behind Vishnu Shivam Mall in Thakur Village is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It serves Thakur Village, Thakur Complex, Samata Nagar, Akurli Road, Hanuman Nagar and Poisar. Emergency and late-night scans are possible here.
It depends on the scan. An abdomen scan needs 6 to 8 hours of fasting. A pelvic or KUB scan needs a full bladder, so drink 3 to 4 glasses of water an hour before and do not pass urine. Thyroid, breast, scrotal and soft tissue scans need no preparation at all.
Most sonography scans take 15 to 30 minutes. Reports are issued the same day, usually by evening, and are sent by email and WhatsApp. Hard copies can be collected from the centre.
Sonography is safe and uses no ionising radiation. It works with high-frequency sound waves, which is why it is the preferred imaging method during pregnancy and can be repeated as often as your doctor advises.
Yes, obstetric sonography is available at VRX Healthcare. Please note that determination or disclosure of the sex of a foetus is prohibited by law in India under the PCPNDT Act, and VRX Healthcare does not conduct or disclose pre-natal sex determination under any circumstances.
A doctor's prescription or referral is recommended and is required for obstetric scans. It also helps the radiologist focus on the right clinical question. For routine screening scans our team can guide you on which scan is appropriate.
No. Sonography requires an ultrasound machine and a qualified sonologist, so it must be done at the centre. Home collection is available for blood tests only, not for imaging. All three VRX centres accept walk-ins and pre-booked slots for scans.
Upper abdominal pain is usually investigated with a whole abdomen scan, which checks the liver, gallbladder and pancreas. Lower abdominal or pelvic pain is usually investigated with a pelvic scan. If you are unsure, our team will confirm the right scan when you book.
Every sonography scan at VRX Healthcare is performed and reported by a qualified radiologist or sonologist, not by a technician alone. Reports include a clear clinical impression and follow-up suggestions where appropriate.
Walk-ins are welcome at all three centres. Pre-booking a slot is recommended for abdomen and obstetric scans so that your fasting or full-bladder preparation lines up with your appointment time and you avoid waiting.
